Because schools are usually huge buildings, occupying massive areas of land, as well as employing many people from the local community, they are a good place to try and encourage to be more environmentally aware.

One of the most common problems that a school cites as being the reason for not improving an area is money.  Well, in fact let's face it, that is the excuse that we nearly all use!  There is a factsheet of grants, awards and other little pots of money that your school, PTA or other groups might be able to tap into - this is available to download on the following page, but before you go mad and apply for money, have a think about what you would like.

The Footprint Trust are also able to offer a free roadshow for schools, whether Primary, Middle or High school age.  This project is called GreenLife and is funded by EU Leader+.  The aim is to educate students and pupils about the lifecycle of materials in the house - such as glass, aluminium, paper and plastic, and get the pupils thinking about the benefits and disadvantages of using them.

For the pupils there is a 50 minute workshop called 'Life Cycle' which challenges them to look at materials from cradle to grave and to think a little about the global issues such as pollution, waste and resources.  A maximum of 30 children can take part in this activity at a time.  A minimum age of 8 years is suggested, although we can adapt this for younger pupils.

We also involve pupils and staff in carrying out an Eco Audit of their school and grounds.  This will highlight good practice and give guidance on how to help the environment through more efficient use of energy and water.  Our Eco Audits could save our school £1,000 per year in wasted energy and water!  This is linked to the EcoSchools scheme, which compliments our work.

A number of island schools are now members of EcoSchools including Newport CE Primary, Northwood Primary & Nodehill Middle School

As a guide, we like to book several months in advance so please don't be offended if we can't visit your school for a month or two.
