The Footprint Trust run a host of varied programmes....

Warmahome

An innovative environmental project on the Isle of Wight to help people keep warm, manage fuel costs, and save energy is among four initiatives sharing in more than £274,000 in grants by the Big Lottery Fund across the South East.

Vulnerable residents in the Isle of Wight will soon be taking advantage of a unique environmental project, which will provide support with home heating bills and top tips on saving energy. The Footprint Trust’s Warmahome project targets older people, those with disabilities, one parent families, and people living on low incomes, to provide vital information and guidance on how to access benefits, grants and loans to help fight fuel poverty.

The project provides free home assessments, giving energy saving guidance on boilers, windows and insulation, and offer impartial advice on ways to reduce energy bills. The scheme aims to improve the safety, well-being and quality of life for vulnerable residents across the island.

The Footprint Trust have been able to negotiate a special rate on loft and cavity insulation whereby many local homeowners will get it free or at a greatly reduced rate. For more details please contact them on 82-22-82.

Water Works

Water Works is a project that will be achieved by raising awareness of the need to use water resources more efficiently. The initiative has been in the planning for a year and coincidently launched in the wake of the recent hosepipe ban on the Island.

The IW AONB Sustainable Development Fund has supported the project, along with EU, Leader+, the Ernest Cook Trust and Southern Water.

Adopt-a-Garden Scheme

The Adopt-A-Garden proposal is an innovative pilot scheme on the Isle of Wight, which seeks to marry these two groups - a person who has a garden they can no longer look after and an individual who wants a growing space. The householder will get their garden looked after for free and the gardener gets a free allotment in return. Click for more details...

Pond Wardens

The IW  Pond Warden Scheme is supported by  BTCV and the Footprint Trust.

There are currently 100 trained pond wardens on the Island.  Some of which are now looking for public ponds to adopt.

We are currently recruiting Pond Wardens. You can go on our waiting list and we will keep you informed of any developments.

Ray Harrington-Vail can give for guidance on general pond management, so if you have a pond problem, please e mail ponds@footprint-trust.co.uk

Please remember that the £5 membership fees are due in - if you haven't paid, we'll assume you no longer require the IW Pond Warden newsletter or Footprint Trust newsletter, and so will be deleting names and addresses from our database.

The Footprint Trust has a large tool store that is free to use for any insured community group, member of the IW Pond Wardens or BTCV Green Gym.  If you need some hand tools, give us a call!

River Wardens

A RIVER WARDEN scheme was launched in 2007, with volunteers acting as ambassadors for the River Medina.

Following the success of the IW Pond Warden Scheme, which started several years ago, the group has been launched as part of the IW Council’s Medina Riverside Park project.

The Wardens’ role includes monitoring the river and nature conservation, they  also be help by informing and educating others. Their role includes helping with guided walks, working with schools, raising awareness about the environment and liaising with river user groups. Some 15 Wardens have been trained. Anyone interested in taking part can contact the Footprint Trust on 822282. or email info@footprint-trust.co.uk

Green Gym

As well as undertaking the weekly tasks, volunteers now also carry out the management of the group - including loading the tools, buying the biscuits and liaising with land-owners and site managers.  The aim is to encourage people from across the Island, regardless of gender, race or religion, to promote fitness through conservation work.  There is a comprehensive programme covering all areas of the Island, and we actively support and encourage car sharing between participants.  Tasks vary from pond clearing and butterfly habitat management to felling trees and helping school children make bird boxes.

Ryde Warmer Homes

The Footprint Trust and the Isle of Wight Council have teamed up to help people in Ryde fight fuel poverty. Staff from the Footprint Trust are to visit homeowners in Ryde and give guidance on making homes more energy efficient. They will be able to give details of grants available and tips on using energy more wisely. If you own your own home, or live in private rented accomodation in Ryde (PO33) and would like to be considered for this scheme please phone; 82 22 82 and leave your details.

Isle Cut Carbon

Isle Cut Carbon is a local educational information project which the Footprint Trust has adopted.

GreenLife

The fundamental aim of GreenLife was to promote sustainable living. It was launched in April 2003 and ended in December 2006, having reached over 13% of islanders. This was done by promoting  the three 'R's (refuse, reuse and recycle) and encouraging better use of resources, by conserving energy and water. This project was funded by the EU Leader+ programme. It worked with the wide community through schools, community groups - such as churches, village meetings, fates and so on.  One of the more popular ways of getting the Island population to be more energy efficient is to give away energy saving light bulbs and water saving devices (known as 'boghogs').  Needless to say that when we attend public or private functions, the fact that we give away these items for free makes us very popular!
Another aspect of this project is our work in school where we involve pupils in carrying out an Eco Audit of their school. This in linked to our schools roadshow which focuses on resources.
we encourage schools to get involved in the international ecoschools initiative.
We also offer free environmental audits of community buildings, with the aim of reducing their bills.

Business Waste

The Isle of Wight Council is taking a lead on reducing commercial waste and has started work, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, to produce a Business Waste Strategy. The aim is to reduce the environmental impact of waste disposal and to improve business profitability. This project will also take the opportunity to advise on the more efficient use of materials, water and energy, as well as waste minimisation.

The first piece of work is a detailed survey to identify the volumes and types of commercial waste generated on the Island. This work was carried out by the Footprint Trust in 2007, in co-operation with major waste companies on the Island.

A wide range of commercial organisations were asked to complete a survey form showing what, and how much, they throw away.
