Summer Newsletter, Vol. 6
To help save energy and resources, you can do simple and low cost (in many cases, no cost) measures around your home.

bullet

Taking a bath uses around 80 litres of water, whereas a shower uses just 30 litres.

bullet

Don't let the tap run when you are brushing your teeth.

bullet

Wash vegetables in a bowl of water not under a running tap.

bullet

Boil the correct amount of water, not a whole kettle full when you are only making 1 cup!

bullet

Cavity wall insulation can save you a fortune, and can be fitted very cheaply.  Call Ray for a chat about the latest deals that you might be eligible for - you don't have to be in receipt of any benefits!

bullet

Draw your curtains at dusk to keep heat locked in your house.

bullet

Check your boiler and if necessary, give it a jacket!

bullet

Ensure that all new appliances are maximum energy-efficient.

Car

Did you know that road transport is responsible for 26% of the UK's total carbon dioxide emissions?  And that in the UK alone up to 32,000 people die prematurely every year as a result of poor air quality?

bullet

These tips can help save you a small fortune:

bullet

Drive smoothly and consistently using higher gears when you can.

bullet

Switch off your engine when you're not moving for periods of longer than 1 minute.

bullet

Share your journeys with work collegues.

bullet

Don't transport unnecessary items around in the car.

bullet

Use air conditioning sparingly.

bullet

Keep your car serviced regularly.

bullet

And the most obvious ... walk whenever you can!!

When replacing your car, you should look out for more economic models, just as you would when buying a household appliance.

Business

Did you know that a dripping hot tap can cost a business up to £65 per year, based on one drip per second?  Not only are you paying for the water, but also the energy to heat it.

bullet

A computer monitor left on stand-by would cost around £25 per year.

bullet

A urinal left on during the night and at weekends could waste around 62,520 litres of water per year, costing about £120 per year!

bullet

When printing you should make sure that you use recycled paper.  A lot of people are now recycling paper and cardboard, but if there is no demand for the end product, the demand to recycle paper will also be non-existant!

There are loads of tips scattered throughout this website, and we urge you to talk to employees and come up with a list of your own.  Simple measures such as reminding staff to turn off lights, to not leave mobile phones constantly charging and turning the heating down rather than opening the window to cool down can all save the smallest business significant amounts.
